I've taking the midtown tunnel for the last two weeks and of course i get pulled over today for the weels being too small....it's bollocks, yeah?

The cop let me through, but what's my answer to the weels being too small...can they stop me from going through?

Section 1022.1, paragraph (l) of the Rules and Regulations Governing the Use of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Facilities states in part:

"Motor scooters having tire width of at least three inches and outside tire diameters of at least 16 inches, and capable of maintaining a minimum speed of at least 30 miles per hour on the upgrade portions of the tunnel roadways, shall NOT be excluded from the tunnels." (emphasis mine)

Your ET meets the criteria. Print out the regulations and carry a ruler.

Please note, however, that "whizzerbikes" and "motorettes" are not permitted in the tunnels.

There is a minimum size limit on wheels. Tire widths of at least 3 inches and outside tire diameter of at least 16 inches are permitted to travel thru tunnels.
This is section #1072.1 of the TBTA rules and regulations manual

Yes you do. Brad, it's the total diameter of the wheel, tire and rim.

Yes you do. You have a 10 inch rim wich leaves 3 inches of tire on each side making your 16 inch requirement. Plus on a LX you have a 11 Inch rim tee hee.

I haven't ever seen a tire size requirement for bridges. So an older Vespa with 8-inch rims is allowed across bridges, but wouldn't be allowed through the tunnels because they do fall short of the 16 inch total diameter limit.

I have the rules in front of me, and the only thing it says about bridges and tire size is that motorcycles/scooters with a tire width of less than three inches are not allowed on the Varranzano.

Sometimes the cops use that excuse to stop you and check all the paper work: license, insurance, inspection sticker... just make sure you have all your documentation up to date, and a printed version of the regulation. ;)
