I would also add....don't ride in their blind spot
Cars are not expecting a scooter/motorcycle to be next to them.

It's funny that this topic was bumped, as I just embarked on a new project to increase my visibility: reflective tape. I ordered 20 feet of 2" wide vinyl sew-on 3M 6160R Scotchlite reflective tape from identi-tape.com, and am having the local tailor sew it on to my riding pants' pantslegs as well as down the back and arms of each of my wife and my riding jackets. If I remember to I'll post up photos of how it looks in the dark with and without lights.

The finished product, quite astonishingly reflective. The photo on the left was with no lights on whatsoever save for the backlight on my wife's laptop 15' away.

Good point! While one needn't go as far as I have, some of the themes I used might be useful for those looking to "brighten up" their topcase and be a little more visible in the city: red when on the back to alert drivers that they're catching up to someone headed their way, and the chevron motif that's also used on fire and first responder equipment.

I used Reflexite V92 and V97 Daybright conspicuitiy tape. It's vinyl, self-adhesive, and can conform to mild curves. It's not stretchy at all, however.

It's mounted to a motorcycle but a 46L topcase is a 46L topcase no matter what's underneath.
