It depends on many personal factors only you can consider, such as fit, style, how you ride, what you can afford, and ultimately, what risks you are willing take. In New York, you can satisfy the legal requirements with any DOT approved helmet, even a "brain bucket" with very little actual coverage. But you'll certainly want more protection than that. P.S. If used properly, quality flip-up helmets like the Nolan N102 can qualify as full-face helmets for this purpose.
